In the Bible there's a story of a rich man.
It tells how he fared sumptuously each day.
That means this fella had so many riches,
That his money just kept gettin' in his way.
There was a big old gate in front of this man's mansion.
People travelled past it on their way.
Everybody envied that old rich man.
They all wanted to be just like him someday.
All except for one poor beggar known as Lazarus;
So crippled up he couldn't use his feet.
The only thing he wanted from the rich man,
Were the table-crumbs the rich man wouldn't eat.
Your only hope is in the name of Jesus.
The One poor Lazarus trusted with his soul;
And now has all the riches Heaven offers,
For he gave his heart to Jesus long ago.
Hardly anybody noticed poor old Lazarus.
They marvelled at the rich man's golden doors.
And counted poor old Lazarus just a nuisance,
For the dogs that came to lick his open sores.
As the years went by the rich man, he got richer,
But never found the happiness he sought.
Though Lazarus never had a decent dinner,
He was happy for each tiny crumb he got.
Well, Lazarus finally died and went to Heaven.
He was carried by the angels through the air.
Those legs that never were too good for walkin'
Were replaced in Heaven with a brand-new pair.
Your only hope is in the name of Jesus.
The One poor Lazarus trusted with his soul;
And now has all the riches Heaven offers,
For he gave his heart to Jesus long ago.
The rich man died and fell into the fire,
And cried and begged with torment in his voice.
Now he wished he'd been like poor old Lazarus,
But, of course, it was too late, he's made his choice.
So, let this be a lesson to you, neighbor:
A story told by Jesus years ago.
Those prize possessions that you're clinging onto
Will turn to dust, and, in the wind, shall blow.
Someday all your - earthly treasures,
And all you did for happiness and fun,
Won't quench the flames that now surround that rich man,
Pleading for one drop of water on his tongue.
Your only hope is in the name of Jesus.
The One poor Lazarus trusted with his soul;
And now has all the riches Heaven offers,
For he gave his heart to Jesus long ago.
