What have I done to my old pick-up truck?
Tell me, where have I let it down?
It's started smokin' and drinkin' a whole lot of oil,
And its upholstery's out hangin' around.
I remember the day when I picked it out, new:
The last '69 Chev on the lot.
The '70 models were parked all-around,
And the salesman, that day, was red-hot.
He knew I was broke, but I needed a truck -
Just as bad as he needed a sale.
We worked out a deal that would keep him his job -
And keep a truck-thief like me out of jail.
What have I done to my old pick-up truck?
Tell me, where have I let it down?
It's started smokin' and drinkin' a whole lot of oil,
And its upholstery's out hangin' around.
I washed and I polished that old pick-up truck,
The first couple of months it was mine.
There wasn't a spot from bumper-to-bumper,
That I didn't get it to shine.
But one day I was throwin' some junk in the back,
That was layin' around catchin' dust.
One item went side-ways, and left a big dent.
From then-on - - I just let it rust.
What have I done to my old pick-up truck?
Tell me, where have I let it down?
It's started smokin' and drinkin' a whole lot of oil,
And its upholstery's out hangin' around.
Most other guy's pick-ups don't rattle and smell.
They've got chrome wheels and big tires - with tread;
A mirror on each side, and one in the middle -
With a roll-bar popped up through the bed.
But that Chevy of mine doesn't need a roll-bar,
It's got side-boards I made out of steel.
I welded 'em up, and I'd paint 'em some day,
But they'd prob-ly just scratch up, and peel.
What have I done to my old pick-up truck?
Tell me, where have I let it down?
It's started smokin' and drinkin' a whole lot of oil,
And its upholstery's out hangin' around.
I've not given much thought to replacin' that pick-up;
It still gets me where I need to go.
But the heater don't work and the windows steam up,
And the turn-signal broke long ago.
I look at the pick-ups they're selling these days:
They're small, like a cute little baby.
If a guy goes through trucks, like I've gone through wives,
Then maybe I'll keep this one - - Maybe!
What have I done to my old pick-up truck?
Tell me, where have I let it down?
It's started smokin' and drinkin' a whole lot of oil,
And its upholstery's out hangin' around.
